Ted's Story

Ted's Story

Ted had always been a determined spirit, with a cheeky sense of humour and fiercely independent. He also had extremely good health. He only retired from his professional business of painting and decorating at the grand age of 80 years old, and was planning to enjoy his retirement with his beloved wife of 58 years.

Sadly, his wife suddenly became terminally ill with Cancer, and Ted and his daughter nursed her at home, until she passed peacefully away, surrounded by her loving family, in her own home. Ted was managing very well at home after she died, and keeping himself extremely busy working in the garden and doing DIY projects. But six months after losing his beloved wife he suddenly became tachycardic and was diagnosed with chronic heart failure. It was clear that he now needed a great deal of help and support and he moved in with his daughter and her partner. He lived with them for six months while he recovered his strength, and to be looked after and nurtured. But it was taking its toll on his family, in looking after him fully, and Ted also wanted to be back in his own home, where he felt comfortable and close to his memories. He had never wanted to end up in residential care or be a burden to his family. Many of his close friends had also passed way and he was starting to feel lonely and isolated as he became unable to drive.

His daughter was put in touch with Lyndsey Ryan, the founder and director of Elsie’s Help at Home. Lyndsey was able to grasp very quickly what Ted needed and how withdrawn he was. A bespoke plan was put in place so that he could be supported at home, but remain as independent as his health allowed. He has homecooked meals, with all of his dietary needs catered for, all of his domestic tasks are done, and great companionship. The team collect his shopping, check his medications, and both he and his daughter are included fully in his care plan, with monthly reviews as his health changes. The care he has received from Lyndsey and her team, has enabled him to be happy, and healthier, his spirit for life has returned and he continues to enjoy living in the home, that he has lived in for 60 years.

Ted’s words

Elsie’s Help at Home have taken away all of the sadness that was in my life, especially after losing my wife, my many friends and my son.  They brighten up my day and laughing with my team, is the best medicine that they have given me. Staying in my own home is an absolute priority for me, my memories are all around me, and they have taken my anxiety away too. My loneliness has gone as I have company and I feel very comfortable having the team around in my home. I get treated like royalty! They are very respectful and kind, and know how I like things done.

The team have drawn me out of my shell, and I can really be myself around them. It has given me and my daughter peace of mind that I am being looked after so well. They really have given me the care I deserve, I would be lost without them. It has given me my quality of life back. Thank you so much for all that you do for me!
